What is Emotional Intelligence?

About Emotional Intelligence

"Emotional intelligence (EI or EQ) is the ability to identify, understand, manage, and utilise emotions effectively in oneself and others to guide thinking, behaviour, and interpersonal relationships" Daniel Goleman

Emotional intelligence is a set of learnable skills that enable individuals to understand and manage their own emotions, relate effectively to others, make sound decisions, and navigate challenges with resilience. These abilities contribute to healthier personal and professional relationships, more functional group dynamics, greater productivity, and where relevant, more effective leadership.

Individuals with high emotional intelligence tend to remain composed under pressure, resolve conflict constructively, and respond to others with empathy. Conversely, limited emotional intelligence often leads to misunderstandings and interpersonal tension, typically arising from difficulty recognising or interpreting emotions in oneself and others. This pattern appears consistently across both personal and professional contexts.

In leadership, Emotional intelligence has been found to be more important than technical knowledge. In fact, research has found that it predicts leadership effectiveness, team performance, and organisational outcomes more strongly than cognitive or technical skills (Côté, S., et al., Journal of Organizational Behavior, 2010).”

The EQi 2.0 assessment

About the EQi 2.0 assessment and debrief session

The EQi 2.0 (Emotional Quotient Inventory 2.0) is a scientifically validated assessment that measures a person’s emotional intelligence across several domains. It is one of the most widely used EI tools in coaching, leadership development, and therapeutic work.

The EQi 2.0 assessment offers a structured, evidence-based snapshot of one's emotional functioning. It provides quantitative scores and qualitative insights, which help people see behavioural patterns they may not have language for.

The debrief session with me as your coach is where insights and understanding come to the surface to help you build your Emotional Intelligence skills. The assessment alone doesn’t increase emotional intelligence. It is the meaning-making at the debrief session (and potential follow ups) which facilitate change.

The debrief session transforms raw EQi 2.0 scores into meaningful self-awareness, contextual understanding, insight into patterns, targeted development priorities, integrated sub-scale dynamics, and a practical growth plan that builds real emotional intelligence.

In short, the EQi 2.0 gives the map, the debrief gives the meaning and the coaching gives the movement. Together, they create a powerful pathway for emotional growth.
